North Devon’s chocolate box scenery, and general ambience, make for a relaxed, idyllic Christmas holiday setting.
If you are looking to spend Christmas by the sea, or countryside, in North Devon, here are 5 handpicked self catering cottages from our collection.
Mill Stile, Braunton, Sleeps 4
This cottage oozes charm and character with exposed beams, latched doors, an inglenook fireplace, and a private garden. Being centrally located, it is within walking distance of amenities, and perhaps, more importantly, pubs, cafes and bars. So, enjoy Christmas without having to drive anywhere. There are also fantastic walks on the doorstep, out toward Crow Point and Braunton Burrows. Get out for a christmas walk with friends and family including the dog.
There are several old pubs in Braunton, a favourite being the Black Horse Inn, on Church Street. It is a traditional Devon pub with a roaring fire on most days in the winter, and low, beamed ceilings. A place to easily spend a few hours relaxing with a local ale and some good company.
If you would rather have someone else cook and wash dishes, The Braunton Inn is serving food on Christmas day. It is a couple of miles from Mile Stile, but you could get a taxi, or, if you have your bikes, ride along the Tarka Trail. It’s a flat, easy ride as it’s an old railway line. Lovely ride too, alongside the river Taw. SQ Braunton is also serving food on Christmas Day, which is located in central Braunton, a lot closer than the Braunton Inn.
Barton Mill, West Down, Sleeps 8
Barton Mill is a luxurious barn conversion in a rural setting, with exposed beams, a log burner, and gallery style bedrooms. Sleeping 8, it is ideal for a large group of friends, or an extended family. The stunning entrance to the property, over the bridge and through wooden framed glass doors make way to an open plan lounge. There is a large entrance into an amazing kitchen area, full of character, with a large family table and plenty of space and additional seating areas and chairs. The perfect setting for christmas day.
West Down is slightly more isolated than other locations. This quaint village in the hills may offer a higher probability of snow! If you are keen for a Christmas eve or Boxing day drink and to join in with the festivities, the Crown Inn is a traditional village pub with a lovely fireplace, cozy seating and great grub.
The White Cottage, Woolacombe, Sleeps 9
This is a luxury, four bedroom contemporary sea front property, overlooking the magnificent Combesgate beach. The layout of this property and attention to detail is exceptional. And the view from the lounge, out over the Combesgate rollers to Lundy, nothing short of a masterpiece.
What a great way to spend Christmas day, in and out of the sea surfing. Or walking with family and friends across the beach. You could even partake in the traditional Christmas day dip in the sea, with no wetsuit, straight back into a steaming hot shower, or bath. Or, you could just admire the stunning scenery from the comfort of the toasty lounge.
The White Cottage has 4 bedrooms, plenty of space and multiple showers and toilets to easily accommodate groups of family and friends.
Woolacombe village is about a 10 minute walk from the cottage, so why not visit The Tides Inn for your Christmas Day dinner? It is advisable to book early.
Golden Retreat, Mortehoe, Sleeps 6
Charming throughout, this cottage has a log burner, wonderful sea views and many countryside and coastal walks on tap. Mortehoe is also on the South West Coast Path. Have a mince pie or two next to the feature fireplace, with friends and family, in this modernised traditional cottage.

Morte Point is close by, including other gorgeous beauty spots. From cozy cottage to friendly, warm pub in minutes, and easy to access long coastal walks. Take in the invigorating, cool, winter sea air. Mortehoe is a good place to bring the dog, with it’s close proximity to walks. As well as this cottage, we have other dog friendly cottages in Mortehoe.
The Ship Aground pub is serving food on Christmas day, and, as it’s so close, it might be rude not to have them cook and wash dishes for you!

Its located close to the Chichester Arms, a great place to thaw your hands with hot chocolate after a fresh Christmas walk around Morte Point, or a Christmas surf at Combesgate beach.
